I hold my hands up I have never read a book by Jenny Oliver, mainly because I’m a huge fan of crime/thrillers, but after seeing the title of this book and its description I was intrigued. From the first page Jenny injects real humour into her story telling. In the beginning I found it very difficult to warm to Harry he’s grumpy, selfish and likes his uncluttered life, which includes very little time for his family, and then along comes Hannah his polar opposite and we see a softer side of Harry, as he starts to question the life choices he has made. I loved the way Harry’s personality changed for the better as each wedding took place, and his feelings for Hannah become more apparent. I adored Hannah who after spending much of the last 5 years hidden away after given birth to the delightful and very cute Jemima, has very little confidence in herself, but as each wedding takes place she becomes a much stronger, feisty woman
Four weddings and a White Christmas is split between the four weddings, and I thought this worked really well. As each wedding takes place the relationship between Hannah and Harry evolves. This isn’t just “another” superficial Christmas book, there is some depth to it, as Harry struggles to have a future, and to let go of his past, and learn to accept the relationship he has with his father, is not the one he has to have with his own family. Some of the one liners between Hannah and Harry made me laugh out loud, and the dialogue between them flows fluidly.
I really enjoyed Four Weddings and a White Christmas, and although it’s obviously a Christmas book, you could read it anytime of year and still love it . This isn’t a long book by any means, but it is certainly worth a couple of hours of your time. A entertaining read that is full of warmth and humour I’m sure Jenny Oliver will do very well with this offering. I will certainly be looking to read more of the very talented Jenny Oliver.
