Left for Dead by Caroline Mitchell BookReview @Caroline_writes @BOTBSPUBLICITY @AmazonPub #BlogTour  #thomasandmercer

Today I’m thrilled to be one of the bloggers taking part in the Left For Dead by Caroline Mitchell blog tour. This book is one of my most anticipated reads of this year. Before I share my review here’s the book description to pique your interest.

5D97226A-3089-4BE5-AED7-04514A65D0D0

A victim on display. A detective on the rails.

Shopping with her sister, DI Amy Winter is admiring a Valentine’s Day window display of a perfect bride encrusted in diamonds and resplendent in lace—until she notices blood oozing from the mannequin’s mouth.

This is no stunt. A post-mortem reveals the victim was left to die on her macabre throne for all to see. When a second victim is found, it emerges that both women were ‘Sugar Babes’ arranging dates with older men online—and Amy finds herself hunting an accomplished psychopath.

As she tracks down the killer, Amy’s instincts go into overdrive when the charismatic head of the agency behind the display makes no attempt to hide his fascination with her serial-killer parents. What exactly does he want from Amy? With her own world in freefall as her biological mother, Lillian Grimes, appeals her conviction, Amy pushes the boundaries of police procedure when a third ‘Sugar Babe’ disappears…Is she as much at risk as the killer’s victims?

At long last it’s time for the third book in the DI Amy Winters series,  Left For Dead. I seem to have been waiting for what seems like forever, as this is one of my favourite crime series and also one of my most anticipated reads of the year. If you haven’t started the series yet it’s one that’s best started from the beginning as Amy has such a fascinating backstory, I promise you it will be time well spent!  If you’re not convinced perhaps knowing that the first book Truth and Lies has been optioned for TV may tempt you. Caroline Mitchell captures the reader’s attention with a picturesque scene a beautiful bride, looking magnificent in her wedding dress, elaborately posed in a shop window, in full public view. Unfortunately the scene takes a macabre turn, the blushing bride isn’t a mannequin, she’s  a murder victim! The victims murder bears similarities to a case twenty years earlier. Are they connected? Is it a copy cat killer? you will just have to buy the book to find out!

As well as tracking down the murderer, there is a secondary plot that focuses on Amy’s personal life but  rather than distracting from the main plot it compliments it. Amy’s character is evolving as the series progresses and I really like her character, she’s forthright and to all appearances lacks the ‘team player’ gene, which is hardly surprising when you read her back story, but she has empathy for her victims, determined to get justice for them by fair means or foul. Her past is a burden that weighs heavily on Amy, and every action and reaction as a DI is carefully scrutinised by those who know her history. Amy’s past is a big draw for me and it’s one of the reasons I love this series so much, I’m sure we still have so much to learn.

I always think an author takes a bold step when they reveal the identity of the killer from the start, as part of the enjoyment of reading a crime thriller for me is working out the ‘who dunnit’. Caroline Mitchell uses this ploy to good effect though, because you know the identity of  ‘The Love Heart Killer’,  there are chapters told from their perspective so you get a sense of their personality, but you also get a chilling insight in to the mind of one seriously depraved psychopath. You know exactly what dark thoughts they are  entertaining, and who their next victim will be, adding an element of anticipation as you wait for the killers  next move.

Caroline Mitchell is one of my favourite authors for a very good reason, I always find her plots imaginative, she knows exactly how to grab the readers attention from the off. Left For Dead is another stellar addition to the series, it’s a fast paced read,  with a fascinating array of characters, some you will love and others will make your skin crawl. The author leaves the reader with a teaser, which has left me incredibly excited for the next book in the series. This is a series I would gladly recommend to crime junkies, the plots veer towards the dark side, which is always an attraction for me, I’m sure a psychiatrist would have something to say about that! Highly recommended

The Perfect Mother by Caroline Mitchell #BookReview @Caroline_writes @BOTBSPUBLICITY @AmazonPub #BlogTour #thriller #thomasandmercer

Today I’m thrilled to be one of the bloggers taking part in the blog tour for The Perfect Mother by Caroline Mitchell. Anyone who follows my blog will know I’m a huge fan of the authors crime books. The Perfect Mother takes the author in a different direction, so I did pick up this book with some reservations. Read on for my thoughts…..

She thought they wanted her baby. But they won’t stop there.

Roz is young, penniless and pregnant. All she wants is to be the perfect mother to her child, but the more she thinks about her own chaotic upbringing, the more certain she is that the best life for her baby is as far away as possible from her hometown in Ireland.

Determined to do the right thing, Roz joins an elite adoption service and can’t believe her luck. Within days she is jetting to New York to meet a celebrity power couple desperate for a child of their own. Sheridan and Daniel are wealthy and glamorous—everything Roz isn’t. Her baby will never go hungry, and will have every opportunity for the perfect life. But soon after Roz moves into their plush basement suite, she starts to suspect that something darker lurks beneath the glossy surface of their home.

When Roz discovers she isn’t the first person to move in with the couple, and that the previous woman has never been seen since, alarm bells start ringing. As the clock ticks down to her due date, Roz realises her unborn baby may be the only thing keeping her alive, and that despite her best intentions, she has walked them both into the perfect nightmare…

D9C1D226-F17E-4CB8-AB53-0EB237C0F095

The Perfect Mother is certainly different to Caroline Mitchell’s previous crime thrillers, described as a psychological thriller, it’s a book that kept me glued to my kindle screen. For me this book show cases  what an accomplished author Mitchell is, whether  it be a crime or psychological thriller it’s evident the author puts her heart and soul into her writing. Guess what? I absolutely loved The Perfect Mother,  it’s creepy, chilling, and very dark. It’s a story of motherhood, and the lengths people will go to to protect those they love.

Roz is broke and pregnant and wanting the best life for her baby. A life she feels she can’t provide based on her own upbringing, in desperation she turns to an ‘elite’ adoption agency that connects her with a wealthy celebrity couple celebrity Sheridan and Daniel, they can provide the baby the sort of life Roz could only fantasize about. She moves into the couples opulent home, to await the birth of her baby, and here’s where things take a very sinister turn.

If you think The Perfect Mother’s plot isn’t an imaginative one,  believe me once you pick up the book,  you will realise it’s an unique plot. The Perfect Mother is a combination of plot and character driven, and what an eclectic bunch they turned out to be! Sheridan is a celebrity, she’s one of those characters that gets under your skin for all the wrong reasons, she’s cold, calculated and definitely deluded, she actually made my skin crawl and fear for Roz’s baby. Roz is naïve, a lost soul, wanting only the best for her baby. Her naivety puts her in a situation that turns out to be her worse nightmare.

I really thought I had the plot all worked out, but to my surprise Caroline Mitchell threw in a couple of brilliant twists that left me speechless, no mean feat!  Whilst reading this book I was accompanied by an increasing sense of dread as the story unfolded. This is one of those books that’s addictive and before you know it you are half way through the book. With an enticing plot, twists and turns, an unlikable character, one chapter turns into another and another. The Perfect Mother has such an innocent title, but don’t be fooled, inside it’s pages there’s a dark and twisted tale lurking. A superb read full of suspense, mystery and plenty of drama! Highly recommended.

The Secret Child by Caroline Mitchell #CrimeSeries #MustReads @Caroline_Writes

Today I’m sharing my review for The Secret Child by Caroline Mitchell, the second book in the DI Amy Winters series and what a cracker this series is turning out to be. You can read on for my thoughts…..

27E121FF-D997-4E58-9F9D-4597348CCF1EDI Amy Winter knows evil. She’s lived through it.

Four-year-old Ellen is snatched by a stranger in the dead of night. Her devastated mother, Nicole, receives four identical phials and a threatening note in a familiar scrawl that chills her to the bone. But she always knew this would happen. She’s been expecting it for years . . .

According to the note, one of the phials is poisoned. Nicole is given a deadly challenge: if she drinks one, the sadistic kidnapper will notify the police of Ellen’s location. The sender claims to be Luka Volkov but Luka is supposed to be dead, killed long ago in a fire that haunts all those involved.

DI Amy Winter is still reeling from the discovery that she is the daughter of a serial killer, and her childhood trauma only makes her more determined to bring Ellen home. When another child is taken, Amy finds herself in a race against time. To rescue the children, must she seek help from the one person she wants to forget?

d8b18442-e003-4d85-9fb4-f74ccccd8fbc

Ever since I read Truth And Lies  (the first book in the DI Amy Winter series), I’ve been eagerly waiting for The Secret Child to be published, and freaking hell it was definitely worth the wait. Amy’s biological parents are notorious serial killers, not the best background for a Detective I must admit! But that’s what makes this series refreshingly original and highly compelling. Before you ask “Yes” The Secret Child could be read as a stand-alone, but would I recommend it? No,  personally I think you need to read the books in order, Amy has such a fascinating and original backstory it would be a shame if you didn’t follow her disturbing tale from the beginning.

Amy is the Detective leading the case of the kidnapping of four-year-old girl Ellen, taken from her home in the middle of the night. Days later Ellen’s mother receives a parcel, along with a note, nothing strange about that you may think but the person who sent the parcel has been dead for years! Told across two timelines the author reveals a sorry tale, but my god it made for a nail-biting, heart thumping read. Although I would never condone kidnapping, I couldn’t help but feel empathy for a character whose own tortured childhood shaped the adult they become.

This book is as much about the characters as it is about the crimes committed, the author has created some fabulous characters, Amy, the kidnapper and her serial killer mother all added to my overall enjoyment of this read. Even from behind prison bars Amy’s evil mother Lillian Grimes continues to manipulate Amy and those around her, she’s one twisted mother ****** that’s for sure, and yet I couldn’t help being fascinated and disgusted in equal measures by her character, what makes a mother turn into a feared killer? How can she possibly consider herself to be a victim? Amy has her flaws like many a fictional Detective, but it’s hardly surprising when you consider who her parents are! The author gives an in-depth insight into Amy character, as she reveals more details of Amy’s very disturbing past, you can’t help but feel her pain and confusion, her constant dissecting of her personality looking for any psychopathic traits she may have inherited from her parents.

There is so much I loved about this book, the characters, the plot which draws on real events making it even more shocking, the shifting between past and present. Add to the fact The Secret Child is one of those reads that reels you in with a promising prologue and keeps you in its grips with an intense and captivating read, it’s definitely a series I would recommend to crime thriller lovers. I’m eager to see where Caroline Mitchell’s twisted imagination takes her next, and that’s the beauty of her writing no two books are the same, so roll on the next book which I will read come hell or high water.

My #TopReads of 2018 by the book review café #MustReads

8E258DEB-1E1A-4B5F-B34A-A92F0A13CEC9

I know some people think it’s too early to be sharing a top reads post before the end of 2018, but I’m taking some time off from my blog until the new year so it’s now or never.

I have been blogging for just over three years now and yet I’ve never done a top reads post and now I know why😂  I have read some fabulous books this year and trying to narrow it down is nigh on impossible. If you read my book of the months post you will know I can’t even manage to choose ONE book of the month! So I set myself an impossible challenge or so I thought, but then I had a brainwave “why not share all the books I gave a gold star too” simple eh?

So my top read list consists of all the books I gave this award to, It’s given to a book I feel is particularly outstanding, a book that covers every aspect of what I look for in a read, an original  plot, great characters and a storyline that drew me in from the first page and kept me in its grips until I reached the very last page. So here are those books in no particular order.

Links to my reviews can be found under each set of books I’ve included

Today I’m thrilled to be sharing my review for Truth And Lies by Caroline Mitchell. It’s the first book in the DI Amy Winter crime thriller series and what a gripping read it turned out to be. Read on for my thoughts, but first the book description….

F957C73A-F90B-453A-AAD9-35AF216DB375

Meet Amy Winter: Detective Inspector, daughter of a serial killer.

Meet Amy Winter: Detective Inspector, daughter of a serial killer.

DI Amy Winter is hoping to follow in the footsteps of her highly respected police officer father. But when a letter arrives from the prison cell of Lillian Grimes, one half of a notorious husband-and-wife serial-killer team, it contains a revelation that will tear her life apart.

Responsible for a string of heinous killings decades ago, Lillian is pure evil. A psychopathic murderer. And Amy’s biological mother. Now, she is ready to reveal the location of three of her victims—but only if Amy plays along with her twisted game.

While her fellow detectives frantically search for a young girl taken from her mother’s doorstep, Amy must confront her own dark past. Haunted by blurred memories of a sister who sacrificed herself to save her, Amy faces a race against time to uncover the missing bodies.

But what if, from behind bars, Grimes has been pulling the strings even tighter than Amy thought? And can she overcome her demons to prevent another murder?

6964FDB0-E0FD-4BD0-AC03-BC0E4DF97731Every  time I see Caroline Mitchell is publishing a new book I get really excited, but when she brings out a new book that’s also the first book in a new crime series well let’s just say my excitement reaches fever pitch. Truth And Lies is the first book in the DI Amy Winter series and what a cracking start to the series it turned out to be.  There are so many police procedure crime thrillers on the market, so for me personally to commit  to a new crime series it’s got to grab me by the throat,  with an interesting protagonist, gripping story line and plenty of heart thumping moments that leave me desperate to read more and guess what? Truth And Lies ticks every box and more.

A police officer who happens to be the daughter of a pair of notorious serial killers was sheer genius on the author’s part, not so good for Amy I must admit, especially when her mother Lillian Grimes contacts her promising to reveal the location of three of her victims, but what will she want from Amy in exchange for the truth? and what twisted game is Lillian playing? and where does a young girl going missing fit it? There were so many questions I was desperate to find the answers to.

I have to mention what a fabulous character Lillian turned out to be, I do love a well depicted serial killer, she’s  creepy, a master of manipulation, and cold hearted to say the least! and yet I couldn’t help but be intrigued by her character, on many occasions I felt a chill settle on me as her calculated games grew more sinister. As for Amy the author has created an exciting and complex protagonist, yes she has her problems like many fictional detectives, but how many have serial killers as parents? As you learn more about Amy’s horrifying childhood you can’t help but become involved in her story,  and it’s a chilling one to say the least.  Another fascinating character was Paddy,  Amy’s work colleague and right hand man, his story? well let’s just say “there were a few surprises there”, and certainly added a mysterious element to the overall plot.

On many occasions whilst reading about the crimes Amy’s biological parents committed  I couldn’t help but think of notorious serial killers Fred and Rose West, which made this book more horrifying. Caroline Mitchell never fails to amaze me, I love her style of writing and her characters, add to the mixture a gripping plot, and a couple of real “OMFG” moments (very devious, but loved them) Truth And Lies has “bestseller” written all over it. I’m already excited for the next book especially as the author leaves the reader with a humdinger of a teaser.  Would I recommend this book? you bet I would. If you consider yourself to be a  crime thriller lover this is one not to be missed.

I’m giving Truth And Lies the very prestigious Gold Star Award Rating. It’s given to a book I feel is particularly outstanding, a book that covers every aspect of what I look for in a read, an original  plot, great characters and a storyline that draws me in from the first page and keeps me in its grips until I reach the very last page.

Hope you are all keeping safe and warm, before I head off out into the snow (I’m not looking forward to it I must admit🙈) I’m thrilled to be sharing my review for Silent Victim by Caroline Mitchell.

Book description

Emma’s darkest secrets are buried in the past. But the truth can’t stay hidden for long.

Emma is a loving wife, a devoted mother…and an involuntary killer. For years she’s been hiding the dead body of the teacher who seduced her as a teen.

It’s a secret that might have stayed buried if only her life had been less perfect. A promotion for Emma’s husband, Alex, means they can finally move to a bigger home with their young son. But with a buyer lined up for their old house, Emma can’t leave without destroying every last trace of her final revenge…

Returning to the shallow grave in the garden, she finds it empty. The body is gone.

Panicked, Emma confesses to her husband. But this is only the beginning. Soon, Alex will discover things about her he’ll wish he’d learned sooner. And others he’ll long to forget.

Holy flipping moly Caroline Mitchell has only gone and written another fabulous psychological thriller that’s worthy of all the stars, it’s a MUST read. Darkly deceptive, chilling and thrilling Silent Victim has gone straight on my top reads of 2018 list. I’m a huge fan of this author I love her style of writing and her attention to detail. Whether it be crime or psychological thriller Caroline Mitchell knows how to grab the readers attention and this book is no different, from the “OMG” prologue to its nail biting conclusion I was well and truly hooked.

I do love an unreliable narrator and the author gives you two for the price of one, the story is told mostly from Luke the teachers POV and Emma a loving wife, and devoted mother, it’s shared between the past and the present. I found myself constantly looking for inconsistencies in their stories, wondering who was the more reliable of the two, which heightened the sense of unease that radiated from the pages. Reading the chapters from teacher Luke’s POV made my blood run cold, not because they were graphic, but because they give an insight into the mind of a deviant predator. As for Emma she’s one mixed up lady as the plot gains momentum Emma’s life seems to spiral out of control. Either Luke or Emma is lying and Caroline Mitchell weaves one hell of a tangled web you really don’t know who to trust.

I’m not going to go into plot details as all you need to know is in the book description, it’s really one of those books where the less you know the more thrilling the ride. I must mention I was tempted to read the last chapter at one point as I was desperate to see where the plot was leading, I never ever do this but the more I read the more anxious I became to find out the truth. Caroline Mitchell takes familiar themes such as betrayal, infatuation, and manipulation, but like any good author she works her magic to provide the reader with a highly original and gripping psychological thriller that will literally keep you on the edge of your seat. Would I recommend this book? Yes without a shadow of doubt especially if you enjoy a psychological thriller that’s very twisted.

P.S Thank you to Caroline Mitchell for naming a character in Silent Victim after me, and also for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A day with author Caroline Mitchell @Caroline_Writes

IMG_3682

Today I have another a day with author……post to share with you and it’s from one of my very favourite authors Caroline Mitchell. I’m a huge fan of this authors books and I would highly recommend each and everyone of them, from the supernatural,  to crime thrillers with a few psychological thrillers thrown in there is no end to this ladies talents.

I hope you are enjoying reading these posts as much as I do, I’m so nosey and I find it fascinating to read how different authors approach their writing. Anyway enough of my ramblings here’s Caroline Mitchell’s post…….

A Day In The Life Of An Author…

I used to work really long hours as a police detective, and I wanted more than anything to give up my job and pursue my dream to write full time. I used to scour the web for articles like these for a tiny insight into what it was like. I remember reading an article about this lovely author who said she used to ‘potter about’ in her pyjamas until mid-day. It sounded like bliss!
In reality, I have little time for pottering about but I’ve never regretted my decision to take the plunge.

IMG_3675

I still work long hours but thankfully, I love what I do, even if edits sometimes make me want to bang my head against a wall! I get up at around seven and quickly check my notifications on my phone before getting my children out to school. After breakfast, I bring a coffee upstairs to my writing room and open up my laptop to begin. If I’m feeling particularly lazy, I’ll write in bed. I’m either editing or writing my forthcoming novel. If I’m writing, I dictate my first draft, and spend the next couple of hours talking into my microphone, while the house is quiet. I take pauses in between, usually to research online and make notes as I go. That brings me up to lunch time, and I check social media before going downstairs for a bite to eat.

IMG_3680

For the last couple of years, I have been writing three books a year, but now I’m working on my tenth book, this can slow down to two. Since leaving my job I’ve been determined to make the most of every minute of my time. I rely heavily on my planner in order to keep track of everything, so I don’t fall behind. After a quick bite, I return upstairs and either write or edit until my kids come home from school. By then I’ve also addressed important emails, and scheduled planned meetings for any forthcoming conferences.

IMG_3676

To combat the dreaded author bum I bring the dogs for a long walk while hubby cooks dinner. Then we sit down as a family and chat about our day. After that, I’m back on the computer, but by now I’ll bring my laptop downstairs and sit with my family in the living room while I work. I can edit with background noise and it doesn’t bother me. If I’m writing, I’ll stick on my headphones and listen to some dark music in order to stay focused. In the evening, I might watch a movie if it’s a similar genre to what I’m writing, taking notes as I go. I try to fit in some reading time, although I find audio books great if I’m doing housework or driving to the shops. I squeeze in something into every minute of my day. I usually close my laptop around nine or ten o clock at night. I work every day and when I’m not physically writing, I’m thinking about plot lines and the characters in my head.

That’s an average day in a nutshell, but there is so much more. I carry a pen and paper in my bag where ever I go, and I love people watching. I have regular contact with my agent and publishers, and sometimes pop up to London for a lunch or a chat over coffee. I love those meetings, they are always very positive and leave me buzzing for days. If I have a cover reveal coming up I’m constantly checking my emails to see what they’ve made. Seeing my manuscript take shape is very exciting, although it’s terrifying when the email attachment with the cover comes through. My finger hovers for few seconds before I click on it, as I bite on my bottom lip, praying I’ll love it. I pour a lot of energy into my characters, and they spend a great deal of time in my head. A book cover is a snapshot of my story, so it’s a very big deal for me when it arrives.

IMG_3679

No sooner have I recovered from my book launch, than I’m planning my next novel. I am in a constant round of edits, rewrites, cover reveals, social media events and meetups. Working to such tight deadlines, it’s incredibly important that I’m strict with myself. If I’m not, I get sucked into social media and fall behind. Every day is scheduled, and as busy as I am, I try to aside one day a week to write a blog post or study my craft. I’m happy doing what I do, and count myself very lucky to be my own boss. I do think you need to be slightly obsessed about writing to get the most out of it. There are so many fantastic things about being an author, but I’ll leave that for another post.

Book description

To catch a killer, you must first think like one…

A killer is playing a twisted game of life or death with his victims. After he captures them, a countdown begins. He marks the time by sending clues to the whereabouts of the women he has taken in three disturbing images: alive, tortured, dead.

In a race against the clock, East London Detective Ruby Preston must play the killer’s terrifying murder game and decipher the clues before more women die.

But this isn’t the first time the police have seen such a sickening crime. The notorious Lonely Hearts Killer, Mason Gatley, was put behind bars ten years ago for murdering six women in exactly the same chilling way. Desperate for more information, Ruby asks her gangster boyfriend, Nathan Crosby, to set up a dangerous meeting to allow her to see into the twisted mind of a murderer.

But the closer Ruby grows to the dark and charming Mason Gatley, the more worried her team becomes. Is he really helping her catch the killer? Or is he lining her up to be his next victim?

My review

I will say one thing for Caroline Mitchell her books always open wth an prologue that immediately draws you in with a promise of a dark and deviously plotted tale and Murder Game is no different. Hells bells once I read the epilogue for this one I knew it was going to be a read “in one sitting” kind of book and I wasn’t wrong! This is the third book in the Detective Ruby Preston and although you could probably read it as a standalone I would urge you to read the series in order, just because it’s such a well written crime thriller series.

The author has used her very vivid imagination to come up with a deliciously dark and brutal plot, and what a disturbing killer the author has created, especially when you consider the fact once the victims are captured, the killer sends clues to the whereabouts of the women he has taken in three disturbing images: alive, tortured, and dead. As the investigation intensifies Detective Ruby Preston can’t help but think the killer is following in the footsteps of notorious Lonely Hearts Killer, Mason Gatley, who murdered six women in exactly the same gruesome way? Ruby certainly has her work cut out in Murder Games as she tries to bring one killer to justice, whilst trying to keep one step ahead of the devil himself psychopath Mason Gatley.

It must be difficult when writing a crime thriller to devise a Detective that stands out from the norm, more often than not they end up being your typical stereotype. Fortunately the author manages to add an original slant to her character by putting her in a relationship with gangster boyfriend, Nathan Crosby. At some point you know her relationship with Nathan will go spectacularly wrong and put her career in jeopardy, but the not knowing why are how just makes their relationship all the more interesting.

The author’s background in the police force adds authenticity to Murder Game, Caroline Mitchell very much brings the brutal crime scenes, the investigation and police procedures to life, which at times make for a disconcerting read. The plot is fast paced very much like the investigation, and I’m sure my heart was pounding as Murder Game reached its dramatic conclusion. I think this is the most gruesome book in the series, shocking and gristly in parts and never a dull moment that’s for sure, for me personally, they make the perfect crime thriller read. I’m devastated to learn this will be the last book in the series, as it has huge potential, but Caroline Mitchell has ended the series on a high and Murder Games is a worthy addition to this gripping and highly addictive crime series.
