One of my less impressive weeks for reading this week, I’ve managed to read 2 books

He’s Gone by Alex Clare

image

This is a book I’ve read for the He’s Gone blog tour and you can read my review on Monday 1st August

The Forgotten Woman by Angela Marsons
image

This book is so different to Angela Marson’s crime books, but I did enjoy it and my review will be on my blog soon.

Book post I received this week

I received a signed copy of Silent Scream from the lovely Angela Marsons

I also won a signed copy of Cruel Justice by M.A Comley

I also received a signed copy of He’s Gone by Alex Clare, which I think maybe a Giveaway for the blog tour (as there was just the book, no note with it, so watch this space)

Arc’s I’ve received this week

Well the NetGalley ban has gone out the window thanks to one of my favourite publisher Bookouture, they have just re-released two of my favourite authors (Angela Marsons) books, they sound very different to her usual books, so naturally I just had to get them!

The Forgotten Woman by Angela Marsons

Dear Mother by Angela Marsons

Good Me Bad Me by Ali Land

Blogging news from The Book Review Café

I’m really excited to share some HUGE news with you……..I’m finally the owner of book case! up until now my books have been all over the house, so now thanks to my other half Andy (who put my bookcase before he started his late shift, and Andy if you are reading this you’re one in a million😘) I have all my signed and TBR books in one place. It’s still a work in progress as I keep finding books left, right and centre, but I’m getting there. I also donated a huge bag of books to a local charity, it was hard letting them go, but on the upside more room for NEW books 😀😀😀😀

image

My new weekly feature #TopFiveThursday has taken off really well and I have had lots of positive comments about it. There are loads of bloggers lined up for this feature, but I’m always happy to add more. So if you are interested drop me a line (my email address can be found on my contact page), or leave a comment and I will get back to you.

When I get part of my quote featured on a book banner, I still get really excited (and I mean literally jumping around, and showing everyone a screen shot of my quote), when I started blogging I never dreamt my reviews would be read by anyone, let alone used in the promotion of a book. In case you are slightly interested it’s for The Stepmother by Claire Seeber, which I found to be an absolute gripping read.

***Blog Tour*** The Stepmother by Claire Seeber & Author Interview

image

Today it’s my turn on the blog tour for The Stepmother by Claire Seeber, if you love a psychological thriller with plenty of suspense and intrigue, you should get yourself a copy right now. Hang on before you go…..I was thrilled when Claire Seeber agreed to do Q & A for my blog, I have to say Claire has given some fantastic answers, so with no further ado

image

For those readers who haven’t yet heard of you or your book The Stepmother can you provide us with an introduction?

Hello! I’ve actually been around for a while (though I’m terribly young…ahem). The Stepmother is my 6th psychological thriller, which seems amazing now I write that – where does time go?! My background was in TV production as a director – I’ve worked on everything from Comic Relief to X Factor (awful!), and print journalism. I gave most of the TV stuff up to write and be a mum, and now I’m training as a counselor, in psychotherapy – in between wrangling kids, animals and – er, all the things on my To Do list ☺

Where did the idea The Stepmother come from come from?

I love – don’t we all – fairy tales! I am fascinated in family dynamics – and so I brought the two things together in this book, which is a twist on Snow White. Why are the stepmothers in folklore always the baddies? Can that really be true? I had a few stepmothers myself – and they were OK – not cruel and mean! But as a fairly new stepmum myself, I saw a different side of the story. These relationships can be fraught with unsaid stuff.

How do you research material for your book?

A variety of ways: talking to others, gathering experience, interviewing people. If it’s ‘technical’ then I will find a lovely expert and be really annoying picking brains! When I wrote NEVER TELL, there’s a big court case, so I went to the Old Bailey and also spent a lot of time emailing a barrister I knew. With FRAGILE MINDS I had to find out quite a lot about the Counter-terrorism dept in the London Met from a very nice senior policeman.

Do you have any strange writing habits or rituals?

I think I’m quite boring! I like writing first thing most of all, if I can get rid of the family! I prefer quiet – if I play music, I tend to tune into the rhythms…but I quite like cafes etc, for a bit of background company. I’ve been known to sit with my headphones on, not listening to anything, just to block out noise!

Do you write an outline before you start writing?

Sometimes, and sometimes not – but if I’m on a tight deadline, like I was for THE STEPMOTHER, I definitely did. When I don’t, I sometimes get into trouble going off at tangents!

Did you have a character you enjoyed writing about more than other characters in The Stepmother?

I like Marlene. She is outspoken and a bit brash, but she stands for everything that I think women try not to be. She says it how it is, but she’s inherently good – just struggling with her own demons.

What is your least favourite part of the writing/publishing process?

Probably the last edit stage/ proof-reading stage when time is running out and I suddenly realize I’ve written lots of really BAD sentences! Also I struggle with the title process. The publishers never want to call it what I do!

Are you inspired by any particular authors?

I love Daphne du Maurier, MM Kaye, Mary Stewart. I loved Agatha Christie as a kid, I think I’ve read all 91 (is it 91?!). I read all the time and my reading pile never gets smaller! I like reading thrillers by my contemporaries now, as well as more ‘literary’ stuff sometimes.

If you could co write a book with another author, who would it be and Why?

Ooh what a good question! Gosh. I think I’d probably write a kid’s book with Quentin Blake, does that count?! I know he’s mainly an illustrator but he’s a GENIUS and I’d write a mystery for older children, I think, with amazing pictures from Mr Blake!

I love the cover for The Stepmother, did you have input in the cover design?

I can’t claim credit for it, no! But I did have a lot of discussions with my lovely editor Keshini about what we thought would work. The book was originally called Mirror Mirror because of the Snow White link – and the designer’s idea for a broken mirror made us both a bit nervous, being superstitious. But I think it turned out well, don’t you?!

What authors/books do you like to read in your spare time?

I read a real mixture. I’ve been reading a lot of thrillers recently, for research, but interspersed with books like Anne Enright’s The Green Road. Recently I’ve discovered Sharon Bolton – I really like her Lacey Flint thrillers.

What book are you reading now?

I just had a birthday – 21 again, of course – and a friend gave me The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry; it’s a Victorian mystery. It’s good but I have to read it when it’s quiet because it’s ‘proper’ writing!

Are you able to tell me anything about your next book?

Er…well, I would…except I’m not quite sure what it will be! I’m thinking of doing a police procedural/ psychological thriller..with DCI Silver again.

During all the interviews you’ve done what question have you not been asked that you wish had been asked – and what’s the answer?

Another great question!
I’d like to have been asked: Is it a bit annoying that, given LULLABY came out in 2007, ‘domestic noir’ has taken off in such a huge way in the past few years…as if it’s a ‘new’ thing!
The answer is – I try not to mind that since Gone Girl & Girl on a Train the media act as if those writers have invented a new genre. Occasionally I fail!

My thanks to Claire Seeber for taking the time to answer my questions, and Kim Nash over at Bookouture for organising the interview

I’ve been trying think of a new feature I could run on my blog, and eventually I came up with #TopFiveThursday featuring bloggers (everyone loves to know more about blogger’s right? Well I do anyway) basically I ask the following questions & bloggers give me their answers simple eh? I’m not sure how often it will run, I’m hoping it will be a weekly post, and run for as long as I have bloggers to feature, so If you would like to take part please answer the following questions and send your answers to……..lorrugs@btinternet.com

Top 5 books this year (so far)?

Top 5 authors you think everyone should read?

Top 5 books you want to read before the end of 2016?

Top 5 blogging tips that you would give to new bloggers?

Top 5 book blogs you follow? (not that you are likely to….. but don’t include me in your 5 top blogs 😂😂, as I want to help promote as many bloggers as possible)

It would be great if you could send a small bio about yourself and a photo, and also a link to your blog and any other social media links you would like me to include.

**Weekly Wrap Up Post**

image

I have only managed to read two books this week, shock, horror! But working shifts it’s not always easy to fit in time to read, but the two books I read I really enjoyed

image

First up was my Top Secret Read I really can’t say to much about this book as its still hush, hush  it hasn’t even got a cover yet, but what I will say it’s definitely going to be on my list of top read of 2016 it’s fantastic read and has a very original plot, it was absolutely gripping .

And I followed this with ……..

With Deadly Intent by KA Richardson

image

Again I really enjoyed this book and I liked the fact the protagonist is a CSM – Crime Scene Manager rather than a detective, my review  for With Deadly Intent will be on my blog next week

Books I’ve received this week

It really has been a fantastic week for me, and everyone who follows me will know I’m a huge fan of author Robert Bryndza, so you can imagine how excited I was to receive book post from the man himself, and he even found the time to write personal message’s in The Girl In The Ice and The Night Stalker. If you haven’t read these books yet you really need to buy them, if you are a lover of a gritty crime read, you are in for a real treat

image

Arc’s I’ve received this week

Well it’s been a WHOLE  week and I’ve kept to my NetGalley ban, I forgot I requested a couple of books a few weeks ago, and I have finally been improved for them, so I really have kept to my NetGalley ban, honest!

Blogging news from The Book Review Café

This week has been an amazing for The Book Review Café I was named Blogger Of The Week over at http://www.Fahrenheit-Press.com, to say I was shocked was an understatement! There are so many awesome book bloggers out there who deserve this award. When I started my book blog back in September 2015, I never thought very much about where it would lead, I thought a few people might read my reviews, but I never expected to have over 3,600 awesome people following The Book Review Café. I’ve also made some great friends in the book blogging community, everyone has been so helpful, friendly and supportive and are always happy to share posts. I still found it hard to get my head around the fact that I’m friendly with numerous authors, who are also very supportive of The Book Review Café, and are always willing to provide me with features for my blog. If you want to nominate a blogger you can do so over on Twitter @farenheitpress.

Book Description
There are two points in life when we are all equal: at the moment of birth and at the moment of death. It is how we live in between that defines us.
Delicately balanced.
Perfectly crafted.
Beautifully written.
We want you to immerse yourself in this dazzling novel, free from any preconceptions that a cover, title or author can bring.
We ask you simply to #readwithoutprejudice.

I love the thought of reading a book that you nothing about, let alone who wrote it . I have taken a quick look at it and I think I know who the author is but I’m not telling

I was approached by the publishers to review this ARC, it’s top secret and hasn’t even got a cover yet, and because I love this authors books (NO it’s not Robert  Bryndza, I’m a huge fan in case you didn’t know) I jumped at the chance, that’s all I can tell you my lips are sealed 🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐

I love doing blog tours and get really excited about them, and before I know it I have agreed to do 7-8 blog tours in one month, which is great, but then I find myself panicking that I won’t get all the book tour books read in time, and have very little time in between to read the books I really want to read which is why I’m going to try and cut back on the blog tours **watch this space**

Whyte Lies by KC Acton

image

Book Description

Gunshots ring out on the sweltering summer air, shattering the peaceful silence. The stench of exhaust fumes and burning rubber fill the humid breeze as the car’s wheels spin against the embankment.

In front of the car, a girl lies hunched, her blonde hair stained red. Her light summer dress is torn. She’s missing a sandal. Part of her wishes she were dead.
Inside the car, the girl’s father is slumped over the steering wheel. Behind him, the girl’s mother lies motionless.
The forest is eerily quiet, silenced by the violence, while the shadows of the trees protect the carnage.

Crime and justice are Detective Faith Whyte’s business. Murder is her speciality.

Faith thinks she has seen it all, until she investigates the brutal killing of a family in Killarney National Park.

However, the killer is closer than she thinks, and Faith must open her eyes before someone else becomes the victim of a dark and deadly mind.

Faith has spent a lifetime running, but the past is about to catch up with her. Now, she must surrender to the present and trust her instincts more than ever.

What happens when the present collides with the secrets of the past? Find out in Whyte Lies, a story about family secrets, the ties that bind, and the true cost of the lies we tell.

I am on the blog tour for Whyte Lies the debut novel from KC Acton on Saturday 2nd July, so I will be saving my review until then

24 Hours by Claire Seeber

image

Book description

Laurie Smith is involved in a huge fire at the Spa She is visiting with her friend Emily, during the confusion that follows a woman’s body is found and the victim is named as Laurie. Laurie manages to escape and realises that someone wants her dead, she now has 24 hours to find her daughter Polly, who is on holiday with Laurie’s mother, before the body is identified, and the person who wants Laurie dead finds out She is still alive

24 hours is told in alternating chapters between the past and present. In the past chapters we learn about Laurie and her abusive marriage to Sid an award winning artist, her friendship with Mal which starts out very innocent, but takes a dark twist, as the story progresses. The present chapters focus on the 24 hours after the fire, and Laura’s journey to find her daughter, before the killer finds her.

I am ashamed to admit I have never read a book by Claire Seeber (big mistake!). I was offered the chance to review 24 hours and jumped at the chance, and I am so glad I did, because I loved it. 24 hours is an intense psychological thriller that will pull the reader in and keep them hooked until the very last page. The characters are well developed, and have real depth, I felt emotionally drained following Laurie’s journey, as she deals with her abusive husband, copes with Mals ex wife, and her husbands new girlfriend!

Throughout 24 hours you are constantly changing your opinion of who maybe trying to kill Laurie, as Claire Seeber cleverly throws in red herrings galore, she has also managed to weave a dark and suspense filled story, that will keep you reading long into the night. I will certainly be looking to read more of Claire Seebers books. Many thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an Advanced Readers Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
