About Darcie Boleyn

Author Bio: Darcie Boleyn has a huge heart and is a real softy. She never fails to cry at books and movies, whether the ending is happy or not. Darcie is in possession of an overactive imagination that often keeps her awake at night. Her childhood dream was to become a Jedi but she hasn’t yet found suitable transport to take her to a galaxy far, far away. She also has reservations about how she’d look in a gold bikini, as she rather enjoys red wine, cheese and loves anything with ginger or cherries in it – especially chocolate. Darcie fell in love in New York, got married in the snow, rescues uncoordinated greyhounds and can usually be found reading or typing away on her laptop.

Once in a blue moon I like to drag myself away from serial killers, murders and gory deaths,
so I was really looking forward to reading Something Old Something New by Darcie Boleyn. I knew I was in for a treat with a dose of humour thrown in when I read the title of the first chapter “Dog Poo Divorce”, and I’m glad to say I throughly enjoyed it (despite there not being any serial killers hiding in the shadows).

Annie is fast approaching forty, twice divorced and struggling to balance her work and family life, she’s unintentionally funny, witty and a good friend and confidant to those around her. I loved the character of Annie she’s was very likeable, she is one of those women who always puts others before herself, even if it means putting her own dreams on hold to care for her family. I think most women will be able to relate to her in some way or another, which makes her credible as a character.

As Annie’s ex husband Evan comes back into her life, things take an unexpected turn and Annie will have to face up to her past before she can look to the future. Besides Annie there are multiple characters in Something Old Something New who all added to the enjoyment of this uplifting tale, and Annabelle Annie’s daughter was adorable and very mischievous, which added humour to the story.

There are real no surprises in Something Old Something New, but sometimes its just nice to read a book that you don’t have to think about to much, and this in no way distracted from my enjoyment of this heart warming tale of regrets, the power of love and friendship. Darcie Boleyn has written a uplifting tale that I’m sure fans of chick lit will really enjoy. It will make a perfect holiday read, so I suggest you Pour yourself a glass of wine, pull out a sun lounger, slather yourself in sun tan lotion and immerse yourself in this feel good book.

Books I have bought

The Real Book Thief by Ingrid Black

image

Book Description
In October 2015, crime writer Ingrid Black discovered that her first novel The Dead, the story of a former FBI agent tracking down a serial killer in Dublin, had been plagiarised and was being sold under a different name by another author on Kindle.

The thief’s name was Joanne Clancy, a former Kindle All Star, and the book that she called Tear Drop was No 1 in the Irish crime fiction charts at the time. Not only that, but she had a second book scheduled for release in a few weeks time, and that one turned out to be a carbon copy of Ingrid Black’s second book about the same character, The Dark Eye. The Real Book Thief tells the story of how Ingrid Black discovered what had happened and how she went about trying to find out more about the mysterious woman who had stolen her work.

Black Eyed Susans by Julia Heaberlin

image

Book Description

Now, decades later the black-eyed susans planted outside Tessa’s bedroom window seem to be a message from a killer who should be safely in prison.

Haunted by fragmented memories of the night she was attacked and terrified for her own teenage daughter’s safety, can Tessa uncover the truth about the killer before it’s too late?

EXCERPTS FROM WISH UPON A CHRISTMAS CAKE BY DARCIE BOLEYN

EXCERPT 1

Ann appeared in the doorway with two large mugs and I grinned, anticipating what delights she had created. When she handed me my mug, I wasn’t disappointed. The surface of the drink was frothy with whipped cream and when I sniffed it, the warming aromas of ginger and cinnamon made my mouth water. I couldn’t resist sticking my finger into the cream and scooping out one of our homemade gingerbread marshmallows. I placed it on my tongue and allowed it to slowly melt there, the sugary surface soon giving way to a soft and gooey centre.
‘Good?’ Ann asked as she sat next to me and grinned at me from beneath a whipped cream moustache.
‘Heavenly.’ I raised my mug to my lips and blew on the liquid, eager to cool it down and drink it. We sat like that, in the companionable silence of good friends, as we consumed our calorific hot chocolates and I could feel the strains of the day slipping away from me until I was almost comatose.
Ann turned in her seat to look at me. ‘So do you want to talk about it?’ Trust her to wait until I was too relaxed to put up a fight. I shrugged.
How many times could we discuss the same old things

image

EXCERPT 2

Ann reached out and wiped a rogue tear from my cheek. I took a few deep breaths, determined not to crumble.
‘What would your granny want you to do, Katie?’
‘To spend Christmas with my family.’
‘And why?’
‘Because her family was everything to her.’
‘Well there you go.’
I met Ann’s eyes and tried to smile. She gave me a sympathetic one in return and patted my hand, then something seemed to occur to her. Ann stood up and headed to the kitchen.
‘Where are you going?’
‘Be right back,’ she called over her shoulder. ‘I have an idea…’
I lay my head back against the sofa and thought about Granny. She had been such a character. A tiny, intelligent and witty lady, she’d been an eternal optimist, capable of seeing the silver lining in every cloud. On top of that, she’d been a layer of protection, soaking up some of the damage my mother could do by unfalteringly defending me and making me giggle whenever Esther became a bit overbearing. But now Granny was gone.
I had tried so hard over the years to let my mother’s negative comments wash over me but sometimes, even though I was thirty-two, she still managed to hurt me. But then a mother is meant to be a woman’s ultimate role model, her port in the storm, her protector. With Esther, it had never really seemed that way because she was always so bloody critical. Granny had been all the good things for me; basically another mother. It was like being in an American TV show growing up, with the good cop and the bad cop.
‘Here we go,’ Ann sang as she sashayed back into the shop. She placed a plate with a piece of our famous Christmas cake on it and a fork in front of me.
‘What’s this for?’ I asked. I was already riding the sugar high from her delicious hot chocolate.
“Wish upon a Christmas cake!’ Ann exclaimed.
‘Huh?’ I raised a quizzical eyebrow at her.
‘Well I won’t have a wishbone till Christmas Day and it’s too cloudy for shooting stars tonight so I say we wish upon a Christmas cake that this be the best Warham family Christmas ever.’ She smiled encouragingly, but I still eyed her dubiously. ‘Oh come on, what have you got to lose? It could work; Esther might be nice for Christmas and you could get a tall, dark and handsome hunk in your stocking!’ She winked at me.

My Review for Wish Upon a Christmas Cake

Wish upon a Christmas Cake is the delightful debut novel from Darcie Boleyn. Sentimental and incredibly sweet this book makes a perfect Christmas read. Dealing with the issue of loved ones lost,it made me think of my own grandparents, and the Christmas traditions we carry on because of them. At times I found myself holding back the tears as Wish Upon a Christmas Cake stirred up happy memories of Christmas past. For an author able to do this shows a wonderful understanding of family love and values. Ok it maybe sickly sweet and sentimental, but isn’t that what Christmas books are all about?

I loved the characters, and the dialogue between Katie and Sam, they fit together perfectly and you just want them to find their perfect ending. Don’t get me wrong not everything in Katie’s life is perfect, she has a difficult relationship with her mother which is apparent throughout wish upon a Christmas Cake, also Katie’s grief at loosing her grandmother all help to make the story more credible, and not just a fluffy fairytale, and I think that’s why I loved it so much.

This is the sort of book you want to read on a cold winters night, put in your fluffy pyjamas, grab a hot chocolate and for a couple of hours and immerse yourself in the delights of Wish upon a Christmas Cake. Many thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an Advanced Readers Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
