The book review café book of the month for **March 2020**

I normally post my book of the month at the beginning of each month, but unfortunately I’m a bit late with this post, but as the old saying goes “better late than never”. I hope you are all keeping safe and well, along with your family, loved ones and friends.

The reason I haven’t been around for a while is I have been really worried about Mr book review café aka Andy, he got tested through work for the Corona virus and unfortunately the test came back positive, so as you can imagine first came the shock and then the worry! He’s doing fine and due to be retested later this week, but the most worrying thing about it all is that this virus is the silent killer, my husband has had no symptoms apart from a loss of sense of taste and smell, no cough, no temp so he had no idea he had it, so it doesn’t take much imagination to see how easily it’s spread.

As usual I’m digressing here, and now to the point of this post, my book of the month for March 2020. I read some cracking books in March, but if I’m honest the book I’ve chosen was always going to be a contender for my book of the month, and it’s already one of my top reads of the year so far.

How do I choose my book of the month?

I choose a book I feel is particularly outstanding, a book that covers every aspect of what I look for in a read, an original  plot, great characters and a storyline that draws me in from the first page and keeps me in its grips until I reach the very last page. So without further ado here’s my book of the month for March….

The Memory Wood by Sam Llyod

I expected The Memory Wood to be a disturbing read, after all the plot is based on a child’s abduction,  what I wasn’t expecting was a read that was harrowing, and ultimately heartbreaking, I must admit I finished this book with a lump the size of a golf ball in my throat. Sam Lloyd has written a book that’s compelling, and one of the most original books I’ve read in a long time. Highly recommended. You can read my full review here….The Memory Wood by Sam Lloyd

Books I’m hoping to read this month

God knows! I’m really struggling to concentrate at the moment, so I really could be reading anything or nothing! But here’s some of the potential books that I hope to read this month.

Today it’s a pleasure to share my review for Mr Nice by John Nicholl, if you like a crime thriller that veers towards the dark side then I may have just the book for you, but first the book description.

Once again John Nicholls twisted imagination holds no bounds, and his latest offering Mr Nice is a chiller thriller with an evil presence that  comes in the shape of a protagonist that will give you the heebie-jeebies, and a few sleepless nights! A child being abducted is every parents worse nightmare, it must be incredibly difficult for parents in this position not to think the worse, especially when the child isn’t found, and the days turn into weeks. I can’t even begin to imagine the heartbreak and pain parents go through when dealing with a child’s abduction. Mr Nice by John Nicholl tackles the difficult subject of child abduction and plays on the worse fears of parents. This book is definitely not one I would recommend to those of a nervous disposition, it’s a grim read at times, and some scenes are very dark.  

The mystery of  the  person who abducted Lottie is known throughout the book. This means Mr Nice  takes a very dark turn  from the the start. By revealing their identity it gives the author plenty of time to get inside the mind of his protagonist, it’s not pretty view, it’s ugly, stomach churning, and repulsive. Here’s a person who enjoys inflicting pain and humiliation on his victims, as for the scenes with the abductor’s mother, they freaked me out, they are spine chillingly creepy to say the least!

I really felt for Lottie’s mother, Megan, she’s left vulnerable, broken and terrified following the abduction of her daughter. To add to her nightmare the abductor enjoys nothing more than taunting her, these are the scenes I found incredibly unsettling, as the abductor feeds on Megan’s vulnerability, by playing mind games that are cruel and beyond evil. Mr Nice is a relatively short read at 258 pages, but I thought it was the perfect length for the plot, as it doesn’t allow the tension of the plot to waiver.  This book reminded me of one of the authors earlier books White Is The Coldest Colour, Dark, gritty and spine chilling.

John Nicholl isn’t afraid to write stories that challenge and shock, he pushes the boundaries of what we expect, if anything Before I Met Him is his most shocking and disturbing book yet. This book deals with a very tough subject child abuse, and for that reason I’m not sure this book will be to everyone’s taste, it’s definitely not one for the faint-hearted as they are some pretty detailed scenes that are grim and very violent. Rebecca’s childhood is left in shatters when her abuser escapes justice. Fast forward seventeen years and Rebecca wants her revenge what follows is a dark and very disturbing tale.

Before I Met Him is a book about vengeance and getting revenge on the worse kind of people, that commit the most abhorrent crimes. It’s very clear from John Nicholl’s writing that he is extremely knowledgeable in both police matters and child abuse, so although Before I Met Him makes for a grim read, it also unfortunately makes for a very credible one in parts. The author gives an ugly insight into the minds of the predators who carry out the most heinous crimes, as a reader you can only hope these men get “their just deserts”.

Before I Met Him is a very dark psychological thriller there no doubt about that, but it’s also fraught with tension and the sense of evil radiating from the pages is palatable. Before I Met Him shows that nothing is black and white, sometimes the lines between become blurred, what happens when the justice system fails the very people it’s there to protect? Is it ever acceptable for someone to take the law into their own hands to seek justice? these were questions I found myself thinking about as I read this book, it’s a controversial story that I’m sure will raise many a debate amongst it’s readers. This novel is definitely not going to be to everyone’s taste It’s shocking and makes for a disconcerting read, so would I recommend it? Yes but only to those with a strong disposition.

**Blog blitz** Portraits Of The Dead by John Nicholl @nicholl06 @BloodhoundBook

As part of the Blog Blitz for Portraits Of The Dead by John Nicholl I’m thrilled to be sharing my review, but before I do here’s the book description…..

 

Emma didn’t know how long he hid, silent and unmoving, in the large Victorian wardrobe to the side of her single bed. She didn’t know how long he peered out, salivating and drooling, between the two heavy dark oak doors, and watched, mesmerised, as she slowly drifted into fitful sleep. She didn’t know what time he pushed the doors open and crept towards her in the drab grey darkness of the night.

Detective Inspector Gravel finds himself floundering when a local nineteen-year-old university student is abducted and imprisoned by a sadistic serial killer, who has already tortured and killed five young women.

How far would you go to save your life?

Portraits Of The Dead completely freaked me out and that was just from looking at the  fantastic and very creepy cover! It’s the clown that did it, they absolutely terrify me! There is no doubt about it author John Nicholl certainly knows how to write a darkly disturbing and hair-raising tale, in my opinion this is the authors best book yet. The author pulls the reader in with a shocking and sinister opening chapter, it was so intense I just knew I was in for a hell of a read.

A young student is abducted and imprisoned by a sadistic serial killer, and my god he’s one deviant and twisted individual, devoid of empathy, incapable of sympathy or understanding he torments his victims in the cruellest possible ways. The author portrays the serial killer so well I felt I was looking into the darkest corners of the human mind. There is another shocking character who is just as evil and twisted, and shocked me to the core with their antics, but if you want to know more about them you will have to read the book (no spoilers here). The characters are well developed, and although not necessarily likeable they added depth to a very intriguing read.

Not only do we get to know the serial killer during Portraits Of The Dead, we also get to learn about the victim and her time as a captive, although the way she was treated at times made for an uncomfortable read, it wasn’t particularly graphic but chilling never the less. As the investigation intensifies and police appeals are made, we do get to see glimpses of the police side of the investigation, again there were some great characters who appeared very credible in their investigation to find Emma and bring a killer to justice.

Despite working out who the killer was half way through the book, this in no way spoilt the novel for me, in fact it heightened the tension as you weren’t entirely sure what the killer would do next. The plot moves along at a steady pace with some shocks along the way, some of which I never saw coming, so this certainly added to my enjoyment of Portraits Of The Dead Just as you thought the author could not possibly have any more shocks in store for the reader, he hits you with the biggest one of all! By the time I reached the end of the novel I was well and truly struck dumb, the author managed to tie up the plot in a very original way, which I loved (sorry that’s all you’re getting, no spoilers remember!)

I’m afraid there is no way to avoid the cliché: I could not put this novel down! Disturbing and compelling, an edge-of-the-seat story. I would certainly recommend this book to crime lovers and anyone else who is looking for a gripping and darkly disturbing read.

 White Is The Coldest Colour by John Nicholl introduced the reader to Dr David Galbraith, a highly trusted and respected child psychiatrist, but in reality Galbraith was a sadistic predatory paedophile. We were also introduced to Galbraith’s wife Cynthia. When Evil Calls Your Name is very much about Cynthia who is now serving a prison sentence and struggling to come to terms with her traumatic past and the realities of prison life. I should mention I really don’t think you will be able to appreciate the full impact of Cynthia’s story without reading would White Is The Coldest Colour first. 

This is a book that is very much character driven, the author certainly gets inside the head of Cynthia and he doesn’t skimp on the gritty or troubling details of her life. When Evil Calls Your Name answers many of the questions I had about Cynthia. In the previous book I wanted to shake her and tell her “to get a grip”, she appeared weak and in awe of her psychopath husband, but after reading her story it all makes sense.

Through Cynthia’s writing we learn so much more about her, how she went from a confident carefree student to a shadow of herself. Galbraith is a master in manipulation,  and John Nicholl explores his behaviour with a chilling sense of realism.  By the the end of the book my views on Cynthia had completely changed, I could empathise with her and appreciate what she went through. When Evil Calls your name is a disturbing read,  as you can’t help  but imagine the awful things Cynthia had to put up with living with such an evil and controlling husband. You feel her anxiety, despair and fear.

John  Nicholls has once again written an intense and dark read, that kept me reading late into the night, (hence the dark circles under my eyes!). A solid conclusion to the Galbraith series and although not fast paced, it’s an intriguing read that explores abusive relationships with an incredible insight into a difficult and disturbing subject.

I’ve followed this authors career from the beginning and I’m a huge fan of his writing, when ever I think of this authors books “dark and disturbing”  spring to mind, but they are soooo good anyway enough of my ramblings.

White Is The Coldest Colour was the first novel that I read by John Nicholl, and it’s one that still gives me nightmares eighteen months later! From the first page Of White Is The Coldest Colour I was well and truly hooked.  **A word of warning** Some readers may be put off by the subject matter of this book, the first couple of pages were very graphic and stomach churning, but don’t let that put you off as after that it only contains minor elements that I would consider to be graphic. Yes the plot is disturbing, but any book that is based on a predatory Paedophile is not going to be a comfortable or an easy read by any means.

This book takes you deep into the disturbing mind of Dr David Galbraith, to the world he presents himself as a highly trusted and respected child psychiatrist, happily married with two daughters, but the reality is Galbraith is a sadistic predatory paedophile. Galbraith uses his position of power to groom and abuse young boys, and when seven year old Anthony is referred to the child guidance service, following the break down of his parents marriage. Anthony soon becomes Galbraith’s latest obsession, and unfortunately for Anthony he will stop at nothing to make his fantasies reality.

John Nicholls has managed to create the most despicable fictional characters I have ever read about. Galbraith abandons any semblance of conscience and fully embraces his true nature, he’s cunning, depraved and carries out the most heinous crimes without remorse.
Unfortunately he is a very realistic character, you hear of such people every day of the week. People who are highly respected individuals of impeccable status, who plant themselves in the community, who have later turned out to be predatory paedophiles, and used their position of trust to groom and abuse vulnerable children.

White Is The Coldest Colour is well written, the plot flows with ease, and as you reach the end of a chapter the tension continues to mount. It is clear the author’s experiences as a police officer and child protection social worker have been used to construct a very powerful and intense tale. White Is the Coldest Colour is a thought-provoking, dark and very disturbing psychological thriller, and although at times it made for a very uncomfortable read I just had to keep reading! hoping and praying that the villain of the piece David Galbraith would get caught and justice would be served for his young victims. I would go as far to say it has to be one of the best psychological thrillers I have read in a long time. This book kept me gripped until the very last nail biting page, and I will certainly be reading When Evil Calls Your Name the second book in the series.

I’ve read and reviewed John Nicholl’s books before and to say he has a dark and vivid imagination is an understatement, so I always look forward to a new novel by this author as to be frank I’m never quite sure how dark or disturbing it’s going to be, but one thing I’m guaranteed it’s bound to be a “hell of a read”. Everything you need to know is in the book description, so I’m definitely not going to “rehash” the plot details, suffice to say in A Cold Cold Heart DI Gravel is on the hunt for a serial killer, a killer who is by definition a monster of the worse kind.

A word of warning for the feint hearted A Cold Cold Heart does contain some graphic descriptions which some readers may find distressing. The author has a knack of creating the most despicable characters, he is able to get inside the dark recess of his characters mind, so the reader is very much privy to the Killers thoughts and reasoning which means this book sometimes makes for an uncomfortable and a very chilling read, fortunately for me I do love this type of read.

If you have read some of this authors previous books you may recognise DI Gravel (although fear not this book can be read as a standalone) he isn’t your usual stereotypical detective, he’s overweight, heading for retirement, suffers with arthritis and angina, he’s sarcastic with a jaded opinion of the legal system and the killers he chases, but he’s like a breath of fresh as he tramples through crime scenes and blunders his way through witness interviews! You can help but warm to him.

From the beginning you know who the killer so there’s no mystery there, now sometimes this can spoil my enjoyment of a crime thriller as I do like to try and work out who the killer is and his motives. Fortunately the killer is such a sick individual I found the suspense came from wanting the killer to slip up and see justice served. Although not highly original in plot John Nicholl adds his own unique signature to A Cold Cold Heart by incorporating a character study of a serial killer who will send chills down your spine. All in all A Cold Cold Heart made for a gripping and nail biting read. Highly recommended if you like your crime thrillers on the dark and disturbing side.

A Mind To Kill is a book about vengeance and getting revenge on the worse kind of people, that commit the most abhorrent crimes. It’s very clear from John Nicholl’s writing that he is extremely knowledgeable in both police matters and child abuse, so although A Mind To Kill makes for a grim read, it also unfortunately makes for a very credible one in parts. The author gives an ugly insight into the minds of the predators who carry out the most heinous crimes, as a reader you can only hope these men get “their just deserts”. At times I did feel the plot was a little to far fetched to be realistic, but it’s a fiction book at the end of the day.

There’s is a very dark psychological thriller there no doubt about that, but it’s also fraught with tension and the sense of evil radiating from the pages is palatable. A Mind To Kill shows that nothing is black and white, sometimes the lines between become blurred, what happens when the justice system fails the very people it’s there to protect? Is it ever acceptable for someone to take the law into their own hands to seek justice? these were questions I found myself thinking about as I read A Mind To Kill, it’s a controversial story that I’m sure will raise many a debate amongst it’s readers. This novel is definitely not going to be to everyone’s taste It’s shocking and makes for a disconcerting read, so would I recommend it? Yes but only to those with a strong disposition.

It may only be a short story but the author certainly packs a powerful and disturbing tale into these pages. It’s dark, intense and hard hitting, in fact some readers may prefer to give Bully Boy Blue a miss as it deals with domestic abuse, and the author doesn’t hold back on the details.

The plot centres around Kathy whose life is dominated by her abusive husband Michael a pillar of society, unfortunately for Kathy whose going to believe her story? Can she escape the evil clutches of a monster? I’m certainly not going to give anything away here. Oh my Michael really is a nasty piece of work, as you learn more about his abusive behaviour towards Kathy I found my stomach turning, and all my sympathies lay with her. All I could hope for in this sorry tale was Michael would get what he deserved.

John Nicholl never fails to amaze me as his villains are always so well portrayed, so much so you can’t help but detest them for the terrible things they do and Michael is no exception. The author takes the worse parts of human behaviour and creates characters that you wouldn’t wish to meet in your worse nightmares. Bully Boy Blue makes for a grim, brutal and very disconcerting read, but it’s well plotted with a very satisfying conclusion.
