The book review café book of the month **February 2020

6BEFEE4A-921E-4838-9A65-14EEDC7A978B

Whohoo March is here, and spring is in the air! (Well hopefully it is). It feels like I have spent the WHOLE winter, coughing and sneezing, and feeling generally unwell.  I’m seriously thinking of hibernating next winter!

58B4B5F4-339F-49F6-8EF6-F7FB84EB6CB1

As usual I’m digressing but as it’s March it means it’s time to choose my book of the month for February. I read some cracking books in February, but if I’m honest the book I’ve chosen was always going to be a contender for my book of the month, and it’s already one of my top reads of the year so far.

How do I choose my book of the month?

I choose a book I feel is particularly outstanding, a book that covers every aspect of what I look for in a read, an original  plot, great characters and a storyline that draws me in from the first page and keeps me in its grips until I reach the very last page. So without further ado here’s my book of the month for February.

I Am Dust by Louise Beech

D8160732-C01C-4612-BC14-46DCDB9E3D1A

Louise Beech is such an extraordinary author, she doesn’t just write a book; she gives each book a heart, a heart that gives life to her stories and her characters. I Am Dust takes you on a journey of magic and murder, love, ambition, jealousy and loss. It’s a ghost story entwined with a murder mystery, but it’s not the kind of ghost story that’s outside the realm of possibility, it’s plausible, heartbreaking, unnerving and creepy. You can read my full review here…I Am Dust by Louise Beech

Highly recommended

The Murder House by Michael Wood #BookReview @MichaelHWood #CrimeFiction @0neMoreChapter_ #TeamDarke @HarperFiction #MustReads2020

Today I’m sharing my review for The Murder House by Michael Wood, it’s the fifth book in the ‘Matilda Darke’ series, and it’s one of my favourite crime series. Read on for my thoughts….

4DD6079D-242B-4035-B58C-65B62F9D5A29

They were the perfect family. It was the perfect crime.

The new gripping DCI Matilda Darke crime thriller about the dark secrets that lie within a perfect family. For fans of Patricia Gibney and Angela Marsons.

It’s the most disturbing crime scene DCI Matilda Darke has ever seen…

The morning after a wedding reception at a beautiful suburban home in Sheffield, the bride’s entire family are stabbed to death – in a frenzied attack more violent than anything DCI Matilda Darke could have imagined.

Forensics point to a burglar on the run across the country. But cracks are starting to appear in Matilda’s team, someone is playing games with the evidence – and the killer might be closer to home than they thought…

4083C85B-A22F-4718-8F4E-F2596618D39F

I have been (im)patiently awaiting the fifth instalment of the Matilda Darke crime series, as hand on heart I can say ‘ I absolutely love this series’. When I  enjoy a series so much I always worry the book won’t be as good as previous books in the series, but I’m delighted to report that any worries I had were unjustified, in fact I would say The Murder House is the author’s best book yet, it’s dark, erring on the gory side with an intriguing plot that will leave you blurry eyed as you forsake sleep for ‘just another chapter or ten!’

Give Michael Wood his due he knows how to get the reader’s attention from the off, the first chapter opens with a wedding and ends in a bloodbath when three members of the same family are murdered in the most appalling way. On first appearance the victims appear to be the ‘perfect’ family, pillars of the local community, they regularly fundraised and contributed to local causes, so why would someone want them dead? What possible motive could they have?  I must admit rather like Matilda and her team I had no idea!

For me a crime thriller is never more satisfying, than when you have a list of suspects as long as your arm and the author makes it’s almost impossible to guess the culprit, for me it makes the read that more thrilling as you try to search for clues, hold on to the suspects every word looking for the slightest slip up. I felt like a detective (admittedly an amateur one!) working alongside Matilda to capture the murderer, each character came under scrutiny.

As for Matilda I love the way her character is evolving, she’s strong and determined and yet she has a sense of vulnerability mostly due to a cold case that haunts her, Matilda feels she failed missing child, Carl Meagan, who was never found. The case is a disturbing one and one which has a big impact on the team, when you add in budget cuts, and personal issues you realise this is a team that could buckle as they are tested to the limits. These are characters with feelings, real emotions, and depth which made the read that more authentic. As the case gains momentum,  the tension intensifies urging the reader onwards, through red herrings and misdirection.

Although this book could be read as a stand-alone I would urge you to start at the beginning, just because this is such a cracking series, it would be a shame if you missed out on the four previous books. I almost shrieked in frustration at Michael Wood as he winds up the The Murder House with the biggest teaser yet! Such an ingenious ploy as now I’m left counting down the days to the next book in the series. The Murder House is fast-paced read ‘whodunnit’, that I would happily recommend to all crime thriller lovers.

My #TopReads of 2018 by the book review café #MustReads

8E258DEB-1E1A-4B5F-B34A-A92F0A13CEC9

I know some people think it’s too early to be sharing a top reads post before the end of 2018, but I’m taking some time off from my blog until the new year so it’s now or never.

I have been blogging for just over three years now and yet I’ve never done a top reads post and now I know why😂  I have read some fabulous books this year and trying to narrow it down is nigh on impossible. If you read my book of the months post you will know I can’t even manage to choose ONE book of the month! So I set myself an impossible challenge or so I thought, but then I had a brainwave “why not share all the books I gave a gold star too” simple eh?

So my top read list consists of all the books I gave this award to, It’s given to a book I feel is particularly outstanding, a book that covers every aspect of what I look for in a read, an original  plot, great characters and a storyline that drew me in from the first page and kept me in its grips until I reached the very last page. So here are those books in no particular order.

**Blog tour** The Hangman’s Hold by Michael Wood @MichaelHWood @KillerReads @HarperCollinsUK #CrimeFiction

After a much needed extended break the book review cafe is back. My first review is for a crime series that just happens to be one of my favourites, so I’m over the moon to be taking part in the blog tour for The Hangman’s Hold by Michael Wood. This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2018 as I’m a huge fan of the Matilda Darke series, did it live up to my expectations? Read on for my thoughts…..

C17FE82C-1620-4D7A-A346-FBE95ABE8017

Your life is in his hands.

In the gripping new serial killer thriller from Michael Wood, Matilda Darke faces a vicious killer pursuing his own brand of lethal justice. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons and Helen Fields.

There’s a killer in your house.

The Hangman waits in the darkness of your living room. As soon as you get home, he will kill you – hang you by the neck – and make you pay for all the crimes you have tried desperately to forget.

He knows your darkest secrets.

The police are running out of time. DCI Matilda Darke is facing her worst nightmare: a serial killer pursuing his own brand of lethal justice, whose campaign of violence is spreading fear throughout the city.

And he is closer than you think.

As the body count rises, Matilda is personally targeted and even her most trusted colleagues fall under suspicion. But can she keep those closest to her from harm? Or is it already too late?

6964FDB0-E0FD-4BD0-AC03-BC0E4DF97731

OMG what a book The Hangman’s Hold turned out to be, this is one of my all time favourite crime procedure series, so I knew I was in for a thrilling read but Michael Wood has taken this brilliant series to a whole new level. It’s a shocker, brutal, dark and fabulously twisted in the best possible way. It’s not often when I finish a book I’m lost for words but I must admit I had to pick my jaw up off the floor and then re-read the last few chapters just to process what I was reading.  Michael Wood is a gifted story teller and deserves high praise indeed as this is definitely the best book in the series so far.  Although this book could easily be read as a standalone I would urge you to start at the beginning just because you are missing out on a “must read” series.

Matilda Darke is one of my favourite fictional Detectives the author has incorporated traits into her character that make her relatable to readers, as a Detective she’s confident, resourceful and determined but you also have a woman who is still grieving for her husband alongside the guilt she feels about a crime she was unable to solve, which makes her character vulnerable but at the same time far more likeable. Just as you think the author is going to bring some happiness into Matilda’s life things go down hill rapidly.  Matilda is targeted by the serial killer and things take a creepy and sinister turn, one that will make her question the loyalty of her own team.

A vigilante turned serial killer isn’t an original plot but Michael Wood puts his own unique spin on the subject and has written a story that’s gripping, fast paced with some real shockers hidden within the pages.  Now normally this type of serial killer would make me question the rights and wrongs of what they were doing, but not this one, he seems to relish what he’s doing (no spoiler here as the sex of the killer is in the book description), and there’s definitely more behind his motives but to what my lips are tightly sealed.  There are few scenes that some may find upsetting but they are paramount to the plot and aren’t to explicit.

The Hangman’s Hold is rife with tension, the author throws in plenty of red herrings to misdirect the reader and thus maintaining the suspense to the heart stopping conclusion. I definitely can’t wait for the next book in the series after Michael Wood left a clue to the subject of the next book. In my humble opinion The Hangman’s Hold is a dark and engrossing tale that any crime thriller will enjoy. Highly recommended.

This is going to come as no surprise but I’m giving  The Hangman’s Hold the very prestigious Gold Star Award Rating. It’s given to a book I feel is particularly outstanding, a book that covers every aspect of what I look for in a read, an original  plot, great characters and a storyline that draws me in from the first page and keeps me in its grips until I reached the very last page.

I’m a boringly organised person and like to have everything set out before I begin my writing day. Looking at a blank notebook or a blank laptop screen with nothing to do is my idea of hell.

I’m always writing. I’m either working on my current novel or making notes or planning future novels, characters and stories.

When I’m at the early stages of a novel, I like to plan out my characters and plots in pad and pen form. The best place to do that, for me, is in a coffee shop. I have my iPod on to block out background noise and scribble away.

Once I’m at the laptop stage, I work from home. I’m very structured and like to be at my desk early. I don’t give myself a set number of hours or a word count to write. I treat writing like any other job I’ve had so I write, edit, revise, research throughout the day. Anything above 3,000 words per day is a good day for me.

I break for lunch and I always have a pot of strong black coffee on standby when I feel the need to leave my desk and stretch my legs.

I write Monday to Friday. Weekends are for seeing friends, relaxing, catching up with DVD boxsets. Strangely, I write best during the hours of darkness. From midnight to six o’clock I’m very productive. Unfortunately, this isn’t ideal as it hampers the social life. So those kinds of days are very rare.

When I’m not writing I enjoy walking (it’s great for clearing the head, especially in winter), reading (as well as writing crime fiction I love reading it), seeing friends, eating out, and, most importantly, shopping for books. My reading pile is slightly getting out of hand as I currently have 306 books in my spare bedroom to read.

Writing is a special kind of job and I find that everyone approaches it in their own unique way. I’d never give anyone advice, but I’m happy to share my own ways of doing things if asked. Writing is not something you just do with your fingers, it comes from within. You don’t only need to be creative, you need to put your heart and soul into your work. And that is why I love writing so much.

Now, on with my next novel.

**Top Five Friday** With The Book Review Café #CrimeSeries

img_1557

Today I’m starting a brand new feature on my blog, I got the idea from the very popular #TopFiveThurday that I runI’ve decided to share my top five with you it will be book related and this week I’m choosing my best five top crime series

Robert Bryndza

img_1546

I’m a huge fan of Robert Bryndza’s as anyone who follows my blog will know, I love the  DI Erika Forster series. I would urge everyone to read the series, fabulously written they make for a gripping read. What I like about Robert Bryndza’s writing is his ability to describe scenes with such conviction that you feel like your there along side Erika and her team. Each book is very original and personally found them to be a gripping read.

James Carol

IMG_1553.PNG

Again this is a series that I  would highly recommend I just adore Ex-FBI star profiler Jefferson Winter he  is no ordinary investigator. An eccentric genius and self-described geek with a passion for Mozart, he is haunted by the legacy of his notorious serial killer father…and not likely to admit this may be why he has such a phenomenal insight into the psychology that drives the criminals he hunts. I especially like the profiling element in this series and they make for a thrilling read.

Peter James

img_1559

Despite reaching the 13th book in the series I’m still a huge fan of Detective Roy Grace each book has been very different and the back story concerning his missing wife Sandy adds an extra layer of mystery to these well written crime thrillers.

Angela Marsons

img_1549

Strangely enough as I was compiling my list I realised Angela is the only lady in my top five crime series. In my opinion Angela Marsons goes from strength to strength with this series and despite reaching the fifth book they show no signs of getting tiresome or repetitive. As for Detective Kim Stone she’s one complex character with  many secrets which make her a fascinating character to read about.

Michael Wood

IMG_1554.JPG

The DCI Matilda Darke series is another of my favourites in my opinion Michael Wood’s writing goes from strength to strength with each book he writes. His books are getting much darker and definitely more disturbing as this series develops, and again Matilda Darke is another intriguing character.

Crime series to watch out for

I know I said top five but it’s my blog, my rules Remember?

Love You To Death by Caroline Mitchell deserves a special mention, but I couldn’t really include it as there is only one book in the series at the moment .The Detective Ruby Preston series is shaping up to be a cracker, this first book was dark and disturbing so of course I loved it.

Caroline Mitchell

If you can think of any book themes I could feature, please feel free to leave them in the comments. If I use your theme I will happily link it to your blog. Would these be on your list? What crime series would you recommend? I hope you enjoyed this feature and your comments and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

A Room Full Of Killers by Michael Wood #BookReview @MichaelHWood @KillerReads

There’s only one person Matilda believes is innocent, and he’s facing prison for the rest of his life. With time running out, she must solve the unsolvable to save a young man from his fate. And find a murderer in a house full of killers…

img_1258A Room Full Of Killers is the third book in the DCI Matilda Darke series and in my opinion Michael Wood’s writing goes from strength to strength with each book he writes. It may sound cliched but it’s definitely the best book to date in the series, it’s much darker and definitely more disturbing than his previous books. The first thing I must mention about this book is that at times it makes for an disconcerting and uncomfortable read, so be warned! Although fairly graphic at times it is in keeping with the plot, and certainly makes for a frighteningly plausible read.

Starling House is home to some of Britain’s most dangerous teenagers, when a young boy is found murdered it’s up to DCI Matilda Darke and her team to find a murderer in a house full of killers. Matilda is fast becoming one of my favourite fictional detectives in A Room Full Of Killers Matilda is very much haunted by a cold case where the mistakes she made in the investigation led to a young boy never being found. Without going into spoilers this leads her to making unwise decisions that put members of her team in serious danger and her career at risk. The complexity of Matilda’s character add an edge to the plot, as you are never quite sure what she’s going to do next. Michael Wood also expands on the characters in Matilda’s team and the dialogue between them makes for light relief in this very dark tale.

Personally I found the Chapters told from the boys POV made for a spine chilling read as it vividly describes the events that led up to them being incarcerated in Starling House, each boys story sadly makes for a credible read in today’s climate. Their reasoning behind committing such shocking and deplorable crimes made my blood run cold. The graphic descriptions of violent events in the boys past add authenticity to the plot. This book could have just been another average crime thriller, but for me this book has depth due to the subject matter. It begs the question what turns a child into a killer? background? upbringing? It certainly gave me food for thought.

Thanks to the authors descriptive writing Starling House very much comes alive, so much so I had nightmares about it, I kid you not! This is a building steeped in malevolence, it’s bleak, claustrophobic and chilling to say the least, there’s a permanent sense of foreboding that never lets up. Fill a building with killer teenagers and it’s the stuff of nightmares, but highly original at the same time, which made this very much a “heart in your mouth” read. Michael wood very cunningly delivers a troubled and tangled tale which literally had me shaking my head as I tried to get one step ahead, fortunately the author never reveals too much so I found myself constantly on edge. Uncomfortable, shocking, and totally compelling, I would highly recommend you put this one to the top of your to read pile.

and the third book Child Taken by Darren Young is for the blog tour later on in the year

Not actually book related but it’s my blog, my rules! Right? I have to mention today’s a special day in our household our “old boy”  Milo reaches the grand old age of 14 today, which is an incredible feat when you consider the vet came to the house eighteen months ago to put it him down as he was in so much pain! He really is an incredible character and we love him dearly and yes he has got presents and a cake!

Oh woe me 😢😢 I have read zilch this week! What sort of book blogger does that make me? I would say a pretty rubbish one. I have had a very stressful week, basically I started a new job I managed eight shifts and resigned! Never in my 33 years of working have I ever walked away from a job, I won’t go into details but it’s suffice to say it wasn’t for me! But on the upside I’ve got an interview on Monday for another job (I don’t hang about), so fingers crossed. Hopefully I will get to read at least one book next week or I will have to rename my blog The lots of books but no reviews café

ARC’s I received this week

Despite not reading anything I still managed to find myself on the dreaded NetGalley and got improved for Four books 🙈🙈

Too traumatized to speak, he raises endless questions and answers none. Only his body tells the story of his decade-long disappearance. The historic broken bones and injuries cast a mere glimpse into the horrors Aiden has experienced. Aiden never drowned. Aiden was taken.

As Emma attempts to reconnect with her now teenage son, she must unmask the monster who took him away from her. But who, in their tiny village, could be capable of such a crime?
