#BlogBlitz One Dark Night by Tom Bale @t0mbale @Bookouture #BookReview

Today I’m thrilled to be one of the bloggers taking part in the #BlogBlitz for Tom Bale’s new thriller One Dark Night, but before I share my review here’s the book description…..

Welcome back Tom Bale, oh how I’ve missed you, just in case you haven’t already guessed I love this author’s books and his style of writing. One Dark Night the latest offering from the author is the definition of a “thriller” it’s fast paced, a plot fuelled by tension, with plenty of action. Adam, Katy and their children, Freya and Dylan have spent and enjoyable and perfectly normal day out, but on the journey home they are involved in a car accident which sparks a train of events that place the family’s life’s in jeopardy.

The authors trade mark of putting ordinary folk into extraordinary situations, works really well, as you can’t help thinking “what would I do in a similar situation?” Some readers may consider the plot to be far fetched, but at the end of the day it is a work of fiction and personally I was happy to buckle up and enjoy a very bumpy ride. You can’t help feeling  some sympathy for the families terrifying ordeal but there was a small part of me that struggled to connect with any of the characters, and I’m not really sure why, although I did think some of Adam’s and Katy’s decisions were reckless to say the least, 

The pace slows about mid way but this time is used to explore the motivation behind the situation the family find themselves in, I know this sounds very vague but I really don’t want to enter spoiler territory. There are some unsavoury characters in this thriller that certainly don’t get the reader’s sympathy, but they do add a dark and dangerous tone to the overall plot. Tom Bale manages to throw in a few surprises along the way which leads to a constant niggling feeing of unease.  One Dark Night is a tale with a dark heart, with plenty of suspense and mystery and heart stopping moments, theres plenty to keep thriller lovers reading into the small hours. In my humble opinion this thriller is a very worthy addition to the author’s ever growing list of books.

**My Book Of The Month** June 2017

Now we’re in July (OMG where have those six months gone?) it’s time for me to look back at June’s reads and choose my Book Of The Month.

The Book Of The Month is chosen by myself at the beginning of every month, for the previous month. It goes to the author/book that I found outstanding for that month, and I may have given a higher rating than a 5 star review.

I read some outstanding books in June in fact I really struggled to choose just one book, this month so I’m going for two books! I absolutely loved these books and although very different in subject and writing they had all the elements I look for when reading a book, well developed characters, a strong plot and bucketfuls of suspense. So without further ado the books I have choosen are………

The Marsh King’s Daughter by Karen Dionne

Each chapter starts with a part of the The Marsh King’s Daughter fairytale by Hans Christian Anderson, as we all know some of the best fairy tales are also the scariest and as the story relates to Helena’s own life it adds to the overwhelming sense of foreboding that radiates from the pages of this novel.
Expertly plotted and wonderfully written this novel made for haunting and compelling read, it’s one of those books that just begs to be read in one satisfying sitting. This is one book I will be recommending to anyone and everybody.

The Fourth Monkey by J. D. Barker

Oh my god I absolutely loved The Fourth Monkey by J. D. Barker, what a deliciously dark and utterly gripping novel this one turned out to be. I’m the first to admit you can’t beat a good serial killer in a crime thriller (hmmm I’m not sure what a psychologist would make of that) but believe me when I say they don’t come more twisted than the The Fourth Money (or 4MK as they are known) but it certainly made for a brilliant read. Masterfully written, fast-paced thriller this novel made for a rivetting read. You can read my full review here…….The Fourth Monkey

OMG Tom Bale never ceases to surprise me, this author has an incredible knack for creating a thriller with a difference, he creates characters that are pretty average, and then places them in the most extraordinary circumstances. It’s then the authors characters come into their own, making for a gripping thriller. Each Little Lie is the latest standalone from the author, and it doesn’t disappoint, it’s going to sound cliched but in my opinion it’s one of the authors best books to date.

Each Little Lie shows that one risky decision can change a law-abiding citizen into a criminal, and this is what happens to single mother Jen Cornish, an impulsive good deed to help a neighbour sets of a terrifying chain of events that quickly spiral out of control. Lies have been spun, truths manipulated and Jen finds herself in danger, the why? and the who? are central to the plot making for a throughly hear pounding, head spinning read.

Jen is pretty average, that is until she realises someone is manipulating the truth to put her in a heap load of trouble, she then becomes far more interesting, you can’t help but will her on as she fights to get to the truth of her terrifying situation. I had so many theories going a round in my head and I was convinced I had worked out the who? And the why? By the half way mark, but Tom Bale deftly leads the reader a merry dance before the reader gets to the truth. There are so many possibilities and theories Each Little Lie is the definition of a “suspense filled thriller”.

What I love about Tom Bale’s writing is the fact he effortlessly draws the reader in with a strong plot and spot on characterisation, he’s able to keep the readers attention by constantly adding layer upon layer of intrigue and suspense, never revealing to much in one go, which for me made this thriller stand out from the “norm”. Each Little Lie is a tale of manipulation, deceit and the power of money, it’s definitely a novel which I consider to be a “thrilling thriller” and one I would highly recommend.

**Weekly Wrap Up**

My ever suffering (well he’s got to be for putting up with me for all these years 😂🙈) hubby surprised me with an Amazon voucher and do you know what? I haven’t bought one book shock! Horror! Only because I happened to check my Netgalley account and realised I may just have a small amount of books to be read on there cough! Cough! I was shocked to see I have 20 (Make than 21 as I’ve just added Tom Bale) books to read 🙈📚📚📚

So despite my hubbys very generous gift I’m going to save my voucher until I’ve read at least half of them (or that’s my objective, watch this space) and in case you were wondering I’m down to 77% on NetGalley shocking!

Top Five Friday with The Book Review Café #Thrillers

Today on Top Five Friday I’ve choosen my five top thriller reads, again this was a difficult one but after some thought these are still some of my favourite books in this genre.

The Theseus Paradox by David Videcette

What I found fascinating about The Theseus Pardox is, that although it isn’t my usual type of book,I found it to be a compelling read. David Videcette is a uniquely gifted story-teller, who draw’s the reader in by writing a chillingly and credible tale based on real circumstances, it’s so well written it’s difficult to distinguish fact from fiction.

The Killing Game by J. S. Carol

The Killing Game is a highly addictive read, in fact I felt I needed therapy after finishing it, as this book left me with a hell of a book hangover! I couldn’t bear to put it down. In my humble opinion The Killing Games has the hallmarks of a Hollywood blockbuster, with a highly original plot, action a plenty, and bucketfuls of suspense this is the perfect action thriller novel.

All Fall Down by Tom Bale

Tom Bale should write a masterclass on how to bring suspense to a novel, All Fall Down is packed to the brim with it, as the story unfolds you soon realise the family are being watched, and the author very cleverly adds chapters told by an anonymous narrator which literally made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, these chapters were full of malice and intrigue, so much so I found myself holding my breath as I wondered what lay in store for the family.

My Sister’s Bones by Nuala Elwood

When I first saw the title of this book I conjured up so many different scenarios but oh my god I couldn’t have been more wrong! New author on the block Nuala Ellwood has certainly written a disturbing and spine chilling tale that I found impossible to put down once I started reading.

See How They Run by Tom Bale

Tom Bale has written an absolutely fantastic book, I felt like I was on a roller coaster with no let up in pace (cliched I know, but in this case very true), I truly loved every heart stopping page of See How They Run, With a well defined plot that was taut and original in content it’s a compulsive read, and one I could not put down until I reached the nail biting conclusion .

**End Of The Year Wrap Up **

Well I for one will be glad to see the back of 2016, for many reasons this hasn’t been the best year I’ve ever had. I’m going to embrace 2017 though and make it my year to take on new challenges.

Now I’m not one for New Years resolutions I always fail at the first hurdle (usually the 2nd of January 😂), but I am hoping to do a couple of things regarding my reading and my blog

• Read some books from my TBR pile, which I’m desperate to get through
• cut down on blog tours, as there’s too much pressure to read a book in a limited time
• Only request one book at a time on NetGalley (this ones going to be hard)
• if I’m not enjoying a book, I DON’T have to finish it, after all there are far too many amazing books out there to waste time on a duff one!
• learn to say “no” it’s ok NOT to agree to read and review every book that comes my way (my new mantra😂)
• Read more books by authors that are new to me, I’ve already got a couple lined up…..so watch this space!

My First read of 2017

My first read of 2017 is Snatched From Home by Graham Smith, this is a book that has been sat on my TBR pile for a while, it’s also by an author I haven’t read yet which means I’ve already started on my goals for 2017

**Christmas With Bookouture** Tom Bale @Bookouture @t0mbale

Another day closer to Christmas, Eeek it’s coming around so quickly and I have a pile of Christmas presents that need wrapping, but at least I’ve finished buying presents, so no last minute rushing around for me, sorry I’m digressing here! Today I’m thrilled to have the awesome Tom Bale pop by the book review café to talk about all things Christmassy, so pull up a pew, grab a mince pie and escape for a few minutes whilst you learn more about a “Tom Bale Christmas”

What is your favourite Christmas memory?

Despite always being really excited about Christmas, my children love their sleep, and when they were young they never once woke us at an unearthly hour on Christmas morning. Usually it was the opposite – my wife and I would be lying in bed, impatiently waiting for them to wake up. One year I couldn’t wait any longer, so I put my head round the door of my daughter’s bedroom and said good morning. As she stirred, oblivious to the sack of presents at the foot of her bed, I added, “Do you remember what day it is?” and she replied: “Tuesday.” As you can imagine, we’ve teased her about it ever since.

Where will you be spending Christmas?

At home this year. Quite often we’re visiting family, so it’ll be nice to spend the whole day in one place. Of course my wife might take a different view on that, as she has the responsibility for cooking Christmas dinner.

Do you have any Christmas traditions?

A takeaway curry for dinner on Christmas Eve, and a bit of pre-breakfast chocolate on Christmas morning!

What was your best ever Christmas present?

Probably a very realistic shoulder holster and toy gun that I got at a time when I was crazy about Starsky & Hutch (and it was around this time that my gran knitted me a “Starsky” cardigan!)

What was your worst ever Christmas present?

I can’t really think of any. Probably as a kid I was given socks and handkerchiefs that wouldn’t have seemed very exciting, but from an early age people realised that books or chocolate were the perfect gifts for me, so I was always delighted with either of those – and they still form the majority of my presents today.

Favourite Christmas tipple?

I tend to stick to my usual beer, though if we’re out visiting and I’m driving I drink quite a lot of ginger beer at Christmas.

What are you hoping for this Christmas?

I’m ashamed to admit that I have a tendency to buy some of my presents myself – this year I already know that Santa will be bringing me Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography, as well as Nomad by Alan Partridge, among other books.

Have you got a Christmas message you would like to share with readers and bloggers?

Firstly, to say a huge thank you for the magnificent support that I’ve had this year! I’d also like to wish everyone a happy and peaceful Christmas, and let’s all hope that 2017 is a bit less crazy and distressing than this year has been.

Tom Bale has had a variety of jobs including retail assistant, claims negotiator and project manager, but none was as exhausting as the several years he spent as a househusband with two pre-school children.

Tom has been writing since the age of seven, and completed his first novel at fifteen. After twenty years and hundreds of rejection slips, his first novel SINS OF THE FATHER was published under his real name, David Harrison. With his next book, SKIN AND BONES, he acquired an agent, a pseudonym and a book deal that enabled him to write full-time. The thriller SEE HOW THEY RUN was published by Bookouture in May 2016, followed by All Fall Down in September 2016.

The last couple of weeks I’ve struggled to read anything, my dad hasn’t been well so my mind has been else where, but this week I have managed to read two books and start a third

Blood Sister by Dreda Say Mitchell

I loved Blood Sister a really gripping read, unfortunately you won’t be able to read my review until the 19th August when it’s my stop on the blog tour

Nina Is Not Ok by Shappi Khorsandi

Not my usual type of read but this book blew me away I absolutely loved it,despite the subject matter, my review will be live on my blog next week

All Fall Down by Tom Bale

Really excited about reading All Fall Down by Tom Bale, I’m hoping it will be as good or if not better than his previous book See How They Run, I just love the cover I think publishers Bookouture have the most fantastic covers they just shout out “read me”

After nearly a year of blogging I’ve finally got around to joining Goodreads, I did have an account but completely forgot my log in details as I never used it! So I’ve rejoined as The Book Review Café (surprise, surprise).

I finally got myself a copy of Between You And Me by Lisa Hall, yes I’ve read it and loved it, but it’s not everyday you get a quote from your review in a book alongside some other fab bloggers.

And I also got a quote from another review featured in my Bloq by Alan Jones, which I’m thrilled to bits about as I loved this book (note the fabulous bloggers I’m sharing the page with, and congratulations to all😘😘)
